I'm not sure what your question is; - the machine had problems with the disks when your were running 5.4-release - the machine works when you are running 5.4-stable A lot of fixes, improvements and some new features are put into -stable as time passes after a -release. This is normal, and therefore it is always a good idea to try -stable if -release doesn't work for you.
