We lost the context here. So that it's not a total waste of bandwidth, I'll
mention that the original question was about not being able to work out how
to run Midnight Commander after installing the package.

Oh, really? Is that what you saw in there?
Where did you get your package from?

Go to http://www.freebsd.org/search.html and search the mailing list
archives. You'll find this problem has been mentioned several times
recently, and a simple explanation was given after checking for validity.
The path is not part of the problem.
