Be sure to follow the instructions at http://www.ucb.crimea.ua/~ru/FreeBSD/30upgrade.html for a 2.2.* to 3.1 upgrade. In short, you don't do a make world, you do a make aout-to-elf-build. Mind you, I haven't finished with my install yet.
