I ran into this problem with glib the other day. Everything that uses the new glib seems to fail with the same error. I was able to get around the problem by running the following command in the directory of the port you want to install: make install PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/libdata/pkgconfig/ I hope this helps.
