Thanks for all of the responses, but there was no bug biting me, just a dumb error that resulted in my having out-of-sync sources and building the if_xl driver from RELENG_5_0 against sources for current. I won't bother going through how I messed things up so badly, but it's all better, now. Thanks again to all who replied and I hope you all figure out what is causing your problems. R.
