Good book, but a bit overated

Stevens. Advanced Programming for the Unix Environment
is quite good, but not perfect. Every university may
have a copy so try before you buy - unless you live in
india and can get it cheap. 

The web is your friend, as are sites on operating
system courses. Check out Beej's
