I dual boot Gentoo (drive 0) and FreeBSD (drive 1) and share a zfs pool (mirror drives 2 and 3) between them. It was indeed necessary to create the pool under Gentoo and not allow FreeBSD to upgrade it. Luckily I have an "old" Sandybridge cpu and FreeBSD Intel graphics is now very good for me.
