Assuming you installed the X11R5 version of the internationalization files that live on Peter's 1.1.5.1 WWW home page, I'd say that it was because the BSI environment variable code is different and it doesn't see your environment variables. Use the following symlinks that everybody but you use already: ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 /usr/lib/X11 ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin /usr/bin/X11 That will let it find them without the environment variables.
