I'll need to think about this a bit more and dig into old, old memories,
for as you will see this has evolved over some two decades when GCC was
used more widely and in varying versions (including as system compiler)
and I have very significantly simplified this over time.

My first indication is that a change like this would violate the use
case we originally had in mind.
