My dad is trying to install FreeBSD 2.0-950322-SNAP using floppies but is having problems when he goes to install the bindist files. First off, I'd like to note that there is a serious lack of instruction concerning floppy installs. There are no real directions for how files should be stored on floppies, or even that they should be DOS floppies. This is bad since there are a lot of people who aren't lucky enough to have SLIP connections to FTP over, or even ethernet to their homes or apartments. (I have personally found the FTP install a wonderful piece of work.) Now, to get right at the problem, my dad downloads all the necessary files (bin, secure, manpages, info, etc.) He is making sure that he uses binary downloads throughout the whole process. He puts each distribution on its own set of DOS floppies. He then creates the boot and cpio floppies. He can successfully boot and install the /stand utilities onto the machine, but when he goes to install the bin distribution he gets a checksum error. He's tried this a few times, downloading and copying files each time, and it's the same old problem. Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem is? Is there a specific way that he needs to put the files on the floppies? Does the CKSUMS need to be downloaded as binary or text? He'd like to get FreeBSD installed soon so he can do some project work he needs to do. If he can't get it installed, he might have to go back to SCO Unix, but I don't think he really wants to do that.
