You are right, just shut-off the things like SENDMAIL. To get PPP to recognize a dynamic IP address you just need to copy the /etc/ppp/ppp.linkup.sample to /etc/ppp/ppp.linkup . While you are in there you can edit the sample files there to personalize your PPP session.
