I give up.

I have extracted the parts of MAKDEV that do sd and st.  I will put
that into a script in ~root.  Ugly, but, at least, I can keep working.

The other alternative is to freeze FreeBSD systems as is.  But, then
someone will buy the CD...

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
