hey bud:

 i have internal zip drive, probably same setup as yours

 my fstab has no mention of zip drive or its dev file

 but thats ok

 use this command, it works for me:

 mount -t msdos /dev/wfd0s4 /zip

 (the little s4 and the end of the dev file got me)

 at startup, my zip is detected this way:

 wdc1: unit 1 (atapi): <IOMEGA  ZIP 100       ATAPI/23.D>, removable,
intr, iordis
wfd0: medium type unknown (no disk)
wfd0: buggy Zip drive, 64-block transfer limit set


take a look at http://www.vmunix.com/mark/FreeBSD/ZIP-FAQ.html
it may shed some light, it did for me.
