I have sendmail calling procmail to deliver to Maildirs, and Courier IMAP to access them. Also Courier sqwebmail for "on the road". I once tried the Courier SMTP server and found it inadequately configurable. The author has very strong opinions about the way things must be done, and any attempt to do otherwise is treated with contempt. I do like the IMAP server, though, and Maildirs are very fast. All you need is to do is end your procmail rule with ".folder/" instead of "folder", and voila. -- "Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say, What should be the reward of such sacrifices? ...
