Sow^H if yuo^H^Hou mkae^H^H^Hake a mistake, you have hit ESC, then hx? Most likely, it isn't about vi, but about the way your terminal is set up. Are you using X or plain tty? With (t)csh, you may have luck with set noglob eval `tset -s` unset noglob in your .login (or .cshrc, depending on the situation). I am by no means an expert, but with a bit more details, maybe we can figure this out.
