2 ways that i know of:

install /usr/ports/misc/screen (it's a nifty vt100 emulator)
run it, then run:  cu -l /dev/serialport -s <speed>
(cu -l /dev/cuaa0 -s 9600 == first serial port, 9600baud)

install "minicom"
cd /usr/ports/comms/minicom ; make install

minicom is a DOS style terminal emulator that can use serial ports.
