It's funny you should mention that- I've seen this too (although on a different host adatper) with a DLT4000- and it does appear to be related to getting near end of tape, but there's nothing programmatically to be done. I have not figured out what is actually going on f/w wise- I have a very downrev Sun OEM DLT4000.
