Hello All, I am looking for advice on how to approach making 2 (identical) single-port 16550A Serial PCMCIA cards possible on the same 4.2 RELEASE Laptop. I am unclear if this is an unsupported operation for this specific card type, please advise, likewise if something obvious appears to be missing here. Pointers to refence materials, gruesome hack suggestions & patches are also welcome. { BTW, Excellent Job to all those responsible for merging laptop stuff into 4.2. I swore by PAO and a 3.5 world, until a misguided mod and a misplaced "make" burned my house down yesterday. (And me with no recent tape. Sheesh.) PAO was fine but 4.2 is downright dandy. } pccardc(8) dumpcis (below) returns (lots of stuff including) a curious string : Max twin cards = 0 (Probably obvious, but I hope not.) [ Donning IEEE LART stick suit and ISO grade RTFM helmet just in case ] The cards in question: (qty=2) "Socket" ("Serial Port Card Rev 2.4"), function ID 2 Laptop Hardware: Toshiba Satellite 1695 CDT ( dmesg attached below ) Kernel: Generic [ 1 ]. The 1st card inserted is recognized, but fails to attach to a driver until an entry is added to /etc/pccard.conf ( This is probably expectable ): # Socket Serial Card card "Socket" "Serial Port Card Rev 2.4" config auto "sio" ? reset 100 After which, the 1st socket card recognized attaches to sio4. [ 2 ]. Upon insertion of (or booting with the) 2nd Socket card, the 2nd card is recognized, but an attempt to attach fails with this message: Mar 21 10:39:29 dialup /kernel: pccard: card inserted, slot 1 Mar 21 10:39:35 dialup pccardd[53]: Card "Socket"("Serial Port Card Rev 2.4") \ [(null)] [(null)] matched "Socket" ("Serial Port Card Rev 2.4") [(null)] [(null)] Mar 21 10:39:35 dialup pccardd[53]: No free configuration for card Socket SIDE ISSUES AND TANGENTAL CURIOUS SYMPTOMS: [ 3 ]. Actually testing the one successfully attached card on sio4, with an ordinary external modem, no 2nd card inserted, it appears to function, albeit a bit sluggishly. Characters typed to the connected device (modem) are echoed to the terminal 1 character behind entry. (Type 'A' see nothing. Type 'T' see 'A'. Type <return> see 'T'. type <return> see 'OK'. Hmm.) I am using cu(1) to perform this test. I haven't had time to actually dial out on this modem to road test for further symptoms or general performance quality. [ 4 ]. I have also noticed that my 3C589D card, when attached AFTER 1 Socket card, seems to not work ( attaches, but won't send packets). No complaints mind you, I simply make sure the 3C589D is in the 1st slot, everything is A-OK. This was a sanity test just to see how different cards behaved together. Thanks G.
