Yes, but which part of the compile?  That may be significant.  That's why 
I put error in [], meaning optional.  Sorry.

I did it.  see http://www.freebsddiary.org/freebsd/upgrade31.htm but I 
think you need to do a make upgrade because you are going from 2 to 3 
(which is from a.out to elf).

It might pay to wait a bit and see what other answers you get once the 
rest of the world wakes up.
