wooowh, i just succeeded in getting a hp-c1533a tape streamer to work on my asus P2BD with aha2940 U2W scsi, it only took about 7 days to find the cause. there seemed nothing wrong on a nearly identical system -with no ide, only scsi- i wrote to the streamer flawlessly. but on the dual pII with ide boot disk, that had to work in a shared scsi setup, the tapestreamer would only allow a: "mt /dev/nst0 status" [all tests were done in single-scsi-pc with active termination on both ends ] any usefull command as: "tar cvzf /dev/nst0 /" only led to a ghost process that wouldnot stop until a reset. nothing was written of course. i tried a lot of kernels including 2.2.14 and another streamer, and compiling aicxxxx not as a module and leaving out the ide and trying to get the aic7xxx on his own irq -thats not simple, i had to remove all cards from pci-slots- the simpel solution proves to be: setting the id of the aha2940 to 7 not 15 as it was. in none of the nearly 1000 problem-messages i read did i find this clue... maybe this is logical but my 8-bit scsi-cdrom never had a problem with the controller at id=15 i think scsi-scanners will have the same problems hopes this helps someone han vd woerdt To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe aic7xxx" in the body of the message
