I was reading the FreeBSD handbook about ports and packages.

What do you people use and why? I have never used packages before and
after reading about them... I don't think I will. I don't like the idea of
generic precompiled binaries... I like the fact I can complie the source.

A question about the compliation though... does the complier take into
consideration they type of hardware you have... or do you have to go into
the makefiles and edit some lines?

Finally, how do the FreeBSD methods compare to the Debian methods? I tried
the deselect command and I really didn't like it. It seemed too complex...
compared to the FreeBSD method. I haven't used Apt though because I
couldn't get it to work. I hear apt is pretty awesome though. Is there an
apt port for FreeBSD (I couldn't find one on www.freebsd.org/ports)?
