Well, I replied to this usenet message, but it bounced back, because
apparently I don't know how to make it actually be seen by people who
care -- perhaps you can pass it along?

xscreensaver 4.00 and Gnome control-center versions 1.4.0.2 and 1.5.12
were released simultaniously to avoid this problem: as of those
gnomecc versions, there is no longer a screen-saver-control capplet
included with gnomecc: gnomecc now expects to use only the
xscreensaver version.

So you will only get a conflict if you are using xscreensaver 4.00
along with some older version of control-center.  If you upgrade to a
current control-center, you won't have this conflict.
