In the end I resolved this by downloading the binary distribution of Xemacs 19.14 directly from Xemacs site. It still wanted that libgcc.so.261.0, which archie couldn't find, but an Altavista search of all things turned up an ftp url to I think somewhere on Doug White's site. So now I'm happy and it works.
