Yes, that sounds the right way.  However, that means *I* will have to
do all the stumbling, if there is some way to add a check to the
pre-commit stuff ("hey, you aren't supposed to have the x bit set, try 
again!"), it will be greatly appreciated. :)

Really?  I would like commit messages look that way too (especially
since it's easier to check if the change to parent Makefile is
committed -- sometimes that doesn't come until a few hours later), but
I thought commits to more than one tree (in this case "CVSROOT" and
"ports") was discouraged due to commitlog duplication.
