This printer works perfectly with apsfilter. The latter does /not/ need cups (luckely imho) but works very well with the standard unix lpd. Install apsfilter with "portinstall -rR apsfilter" and you'll be happy. You can also go for cups, but make sure you read some installation papers on the net very carefully.
