Thanks for that tip, that's the right answer! Most bizarre: the installation had generated the 'config' file in /usr/local/lib/leafnode, which did contain the server name I'd added to the config file which I thought was supposed to be in /usr/lib/leafnode. Maybe I'd had to give that information during the compilation process, I can't remember. Anyway, I touched /usr/local/lib/leafnode/groupinfo into existence, and now leafnode works. All I had to do was delete most of the entries in /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/ to prevent fetch from going off to grab the contents of _all_ of usenet first time around after fetching the complete newsgroup list from my ISP! One more question if you don't mind: what would be the best way for me to check for new news when I'm online: could I add a call to fetch from ppp.linkup? It's a little annoying to have to crank up another root xterm to fetch news when I'm really the only user.
