1. The current port works.

teTeX's texmf tree has been released last week.  Watch out for
Satoshi's commitment in the next days. ;-)

You already have to be root when you run "make".  The pre-extract
and pre-patch step do some work in /usr/local/teTeX which is a
prerequisite for the do-build step.

These error messages are caused by the missing /usr/local/teTeX in
the pre-extract step.

Do "su", and everything should work fine.

BTW: Why do you not install the teTeX package?
