You can add the line
xmessage*font: -*-fixed-*-*-*-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
to the file `~/.Xresources'. (I think that file is read at the start
of the X session, but to be certain you can add
xrdb -merge ${HOME}/.Xresources
to ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession, as the case may be. I personally keep
my Xresources elsewhere, and merge them as above.)
