I am planning to put up a FreeBSD/Linux machine as a proxy/firewall. The machine to do Network Address Translation. There will be 20 machines sitting behind the proxy/firewall At the moment I have a PII Celeron with 64 meg ram and a 4 gig ide hdd. This machine is directly connected to a Cisco 1601 router connecting to a 256k diginet line. Is this hardware sufficient to support this system? The other thing I wanted to ask you guys is if I put up a mail server on the same machine. Say for instance sending at the most 200 messages a day and receiving about another 300 and setting up apache getting 10 hits for the first 2 months and thereafter about a 100 at the most on a daily basis. Would this be too much for the machine to handle? We are still discussing if the mail gonna be web based on the system. I guess that should change things a bit coz we will be running a virtual server for the mail. What do you guys think would be the best hardware for this type of system? And if I should require to machines, what is the best way to balance the load between them, ie which apps/daemons should run on which machines?
