cured, and is now back.

So you have to install Compat22 and anything else that does not require the
a.out library, reboot, go into /stand/sysinstall, and then install packages
which require a.out.

When you install FreeBSD from scratch, install e.g.
the XFree86-aoutlibs-3.3.3 package.
