About a year and a half ago, I encountered Linux and BSDI's product. As about 75% of my work has been under Sys V and it's varients, I loaded Linux on my home systems and have been rather pleased. At the same time, I had a customer, an Internet provider, who was running BSDI. As their machines became loaded, they developed execution time problems and had trouble with process that would not die (both zombies and something stranger). I replaced their machine with a Linux one and execution speed soared as did throughput, etc. I, perhaps mistaken;y, judged '386 BDS's by that incident. A collegue of mine has commented that I ought to look at Free-BSD now. I would like to state that I am a Free *nix advocate, but am not a frothing at the mouth Linux fan. It has its virtues and it has its faults. What I am asking is for a reasonally objective comparison of Linux and Free-BSD, and some reasons why I should support Free-BSD. You need not try to woo me away from Linux, I intend to keep at least one machine running it. However, I am considering running a BDS derived system on one of my machines and checking it out if it looks like it is worth the time. Thanks in Advance, pjm -----------------------------+------------------------------------------------ Paul J.
