Problem is most likely log files in /var as stuff in / shouldn't change too
much.

If this is the case, I'd suggest a separate partition for /var might be
appropriate. The size will depend on what you are logging and long you want
to keep your logfiles. I would suggest rotating logfiles at regular
intervals, and archiving if required. newsyslog is useful for this - man
newsyslog.
