It Doesn't seem to have any impact concerning my problem, propably some sb700 owners might want to test also. Don't know in how far this will give any hint but in 7.2 I worked around the crash on boot by compiling the kernel w/o any usb support, then adviced /etc/rc to load the necessary modules.
