I think I made a mistake and filled up my root partition by installing
packages as root. ( I'm guessing base on a message I found in a search of
questions archive.)

How can I remedy the situation?

Also what is the best way to avoid the problem in the future?

my root partition is 50megs which should be enough.
created a separate /var, /usr when I installed.

TIA
