Just remove the Z flag from the applicable lines in /etc/newsyslog.conf, and you'll accomplish not compressing the log files entirely without patching newsyslog. I may sound a bit harsh, but man newsyslog.conf clearly states the purpose of each flag, and the use of any of the flags is not mandatory.
