A client has come to me and asked me to build them a server that will act as a hefty web server. I've built several web servers, and 3 different primary ISP servers but none of them of this particular size. Basically my client said to me: "I want a server that can potentially handle 1 million hits a day" Well doing a little math, thats approximately 12 hits / second, over a complete even distribution... but thats not likely as most hits will occur during the day and evening and not late night. So, I figure the machine will need to be able to handle approximately 24 hits / second. FreeBSD is my operating system of choice, and I know some of you operate some monster web servers... Is 1 million hits / day a realistic goal for a single machine? Even if it is, I figure to achive this particular goal, I am going to need some top notch components. I've already got the top notch OS, and if anything can handle the load, I would bet money freebsd can. Someone actually made me laugh by suggesting NT for the job. Heh. Could someone who has had to do this before provide: Motherboard make / model CPU Memory given hard drive, etc. Network card? Etc... I really want to know everything about the configuration to make this thing scream. He's a good client and we want to treat him right. I really need a solution that has sort of proven itself in the field. Thanks for all your help guys.
