My preference (in sequence):

ressurect "apache" in-place, and revert it to 1.2.1.
repository copy "apache" to "apache-ssl", while renaming pkg and pkg.SSL etc.
remove ssl stuff from "apache"
remove non-ssl stuff from "apache-ssl".
repository copy "apache" to "apache-current" or "apache13"
update "apache-current" or "apache13" to 1.3a1 from the present version.

at this point, we have apache -> 1.2.1, apache-ssl -> 1.1.1 (or whatever)
and apache-current (or apache13) with history back to beginning of time.

At some point when 1.3 becomes "stable" or "released", we can consider
copying the 1.3 port contents back to "apache" without loosing much from
the 1.2 era. If 1.2.1 is the end of the 1.2 development, then this is
probably quite safe.

Cheers,
-Peter
