I got similar results using the shell archive and simple class file
installers under redhat linux this morning.  the rpm install worked fine,
although it doesn't detect your jdk automatically, so you have to give it
a command line option or set an environmental variable to get it to work.

haven't confirmed that this works on freebsd, since i'm stuck at work.
