Well, the salient pieces seem to be:

a) You were able to install from the CD
b) Full blown multiuser doesn't happen

Try booting with ACPI disabled? I'm on vacation and odn't have this 
particular h/w anyway so I can't reproduce it myself, and am reduced to 
sending back dribbles and drabbles of suggestions.
