I just tracked this one down and since I havn't seen this mentioned thought I'd mention it to save someone else the same trouble. I installed linux-netscape (for the linux plugins), don't run portmapper on this machine and do use log-in-vain. Every time it tried to resolve anything I saw 6 or 7 hits on localhost, rpc and it had to wait for something to time out before getting the dns resolution and then working correctly ... It turned out that /usr/compat/linux/etc/nsswitch.conf had lots of entries for nis in it. I removed the nis entries and all went back to as I'd expect. Should these entries be there by default ?
