I'd say everything it's emitting is byte-swapped:
<EN C                DCR-MOD IREV2:06>
<NEC                 CD-ROM DRIVE:260>

(This has been a simple sequence of C-t and C-f commands in Emacs.)

Well, and if it's also byte-swapping its ID, who'd be surprised that
the driver thinks it's a hard disk? :-)
