Hi,

assuming the required skills and tools are available, it's still not
necessarily easy, some circuit boards are hard to repair. However,
pluging in a network interface card might require to open one side of a
computer case, soldering done on the mobo might require to disconnect
complex wiring and to completely disassemble the case and all
components inside of the case. For whatever reason the OP plugged in a
network interface card instead of replacing the connector, hot glue
might have solved the issue, assuming the OP doesn't need to plug the
cable in and out very often.

Regarding the connectors of the cable the situation is different. Using
a crimp pliers doesn't require skills, just some patience. At least
when using an el cheapo crimp pliers as mine patience is required.
For rare use a very cheap crimp pliers does the job and having a few
network and telephone connectors in stock is helpful in case of
emergency, e.g. when a cable is broken, while all shops are closed.

Btw. I have no idea what can cause the issue, if swapping cables
and SATA connectors doesn't change something. I would expect that if
something is fishy, after swapping cables and connectors at least
FreeBSD is shown and Windows isn't shown anymore.

Regards,
Ralf
