I realized shortly after mailing what probably happened -- the
softupdates source likely changed and I needed to copy the new versions
into the kernel source tree. It had been a while since I originally
installed softupdates and I had forgotten all about it.

I copied the new versions into the kernel source tree and everything
works fine.

Hope nobody wasted any time.

Sorry for the trouble -- chalk up a 'duh' for me.
