I don't know the answer to that problem.

But I believe to remember that I was asked by the configuration
utility if I want a virtual desktop or not.

Perhaps renaming your /etc/X11/XF86Config to a backup name,
another configuration run and finally a careful 'diff -u old new'
will help you to find out what is necessary.
