You received two copies from them because they replied to all. I
didn't think the list would be interested in how to recover a Windows
98 system and replied to you directly.

As to why system information died, you probably installed or did
something that wiped or corrupted one of the files that Msinfo32.exe
uses. There are some knowledge base articles at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/search/a.asp?FR=0 on this
subject. You select windows 98 and enter sysinfo for the query and see
if the error message you are receiving from SysInfo matches. This URL
is the equivalent of searching the FreeBSD archives for fixes before
you ask a question on the list. Windows 98 is always doing something
with a HD and, for example, powering a system down with out doing a
shutdown will leave it in a suspect condition. A bad shutdown can
destroy the FAT tables and require formating the hard drive and
reinstalling everything. I think droping power to FreeBSD can be bad
but it isn't playing with the hard drive in the background. Your
chances of recovering from a bad shutdown are better with FreeBSD.

To reinstall system information you would run sfc from the start>run
and Click "Extract one file from installation disk," type
"msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes). Sfc will then reinstall system
information. SFC is not part of system information. It is a program
that system information uses.

If you are interested in things that can break system information go
to the URL above, select windows 98 and query on "msinfo32".

Reinstalling 98 over an existing system will not always fix broken Win
9x systems. Problems because of the registry require clean installs
where you install to a new directory. If you are booting more than one
system, the reinstall or clean install can break more things than it
fixes.
