Rebuilding databases/sqlite3 with that option fixes the problem. I also see that that option is on by default, I'm not sure why my build doesn't have it (My install is years old ...). It would be nice if the thunderbird build failed at build time when sqlite doesn't have the necessary functionality compiled in, but I guess it doesn't affect a lot of people.
