Years ago, a lawsuit was filed against distributors of 4.4 BSD because AT&T claimed it contained their copyrighted code. In the end (one and a half years later or so) a settlement was agreed between the parties that it was OK to distribute 4.4 BSD *Lite*, a version that does not contain the files in question. That's only the story in an incomplete nutshell; type 'BSD lawsuit Lite' in a search engine and you'll find a lot of references that explain it in much more detail. Karel.
