The problem, I think, after some code perusing, is that it chokes in the case of a pcm device that can't do full duplex. The libretto 70 can't, both because I don't have a second drq configured, but also because it has no mic or line in. So I would think vat should fall back to listen-only mode gracefully. vat (again the package) did this ok on another box, with voxware and gus0 (apparently not configed right for full duplex; no second drq).
