I tried all this and everything in google and it didn't helped. Meanwhile,
gnome-terminal is working fine for brand-new user, but fails to start with the
same error message for old user (gnome2 user). 

I finally was able to fix this by removing stale dmrc file from
/var/cache/gdm/<user>/dmrc.
