FWIW, I am getting exactly the same error, on a very similar setup.
ASUS motherboard with AIC7890AB/3860, 2xPII-400 and 256MB ECC memory,
1x9G Cheetah (LVD) and (when I get the snapshot to work) a Yamaha SCSI-2
CD-writer. The system is not overclocked. :-)

I'm currently running the ancient 980520-version (which works, although
not as good as I'd want :-) and I tried to install the 0712 Snapshot.

I'll take a look at the timing values as Justin suggested, but it seems
funny the same error comes up on two such similar configs when upgrading
nothing but the source.

Any other ideas?
